Drama, French, 2007
Director: Claude Berri
Actors and Actresses
Audrey Tautou ... Camille Fauque
Guillaume Canet ... Franck
Laurent Stocker ... Philibert Marquet de la Tubeli?re
Fran?oise Bertin ... Paulette

A simple movie about ordinary people like you and me. People quarrel, people die, people fall in love, people work. 3 such people live together under the same roof. I like French movies because they describe simple life, not so dramatic but they reflect quietly.

Shall we kiss? Un baiser s'il vous pla?t

Romantic comedy, France 2007
Director: Emmanuel Mouret

Virginie Ledoyen ... Judith
Emmanuel Mouret ... Nicolas
Julie Gayet ... ?milie

Micha?l Cohen ... Gabriel
Fr?d?rique Bel ... Caline
Stefano Accorsi ... Claudio

Story: Emilie was out of her home town and met a stranger Gabriel who gave her a lift. They ended up spending the day together and had dinner together, just when they were going to part and say goodbye for the night, Gabriel tried to kiss her and she resisted. She then tried to explain to Gabriel how something that happened to her friends made her very hesitant in kissing him. She told him the story of her friends - it was about Nicolas and Judith who started off as just very good friends and how a bizarre request of Nicolas has set them onto a dangerous emotional/physical journey, it has something to do with a certain kiss between them ...

My review:
We were given free tickets of this movie at the premier of the Hong Kong international film festival in March 2008. Tickets were provided by French Tourism board to French alumni association of Hong Kong. The director/leading actor Emmanuel Mouret was there too.

A nice and wonderful comedy that makes fun of friendship, love, husband, wife, lovers, kisses and sex. Sounds like all the good ingredients for a romantic comedy. There were no shortage of funny situation and carefully crafted script

The Girl from Paris

The Girl from Paris (Une hirondelle a fait le printemps) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - France ] (buy from Amazon)

Director: Christian Carion

My rating: 3
Key actors/actresses:
Michel Serrault ... Adrien
Mathilde Seigner ... Sandrine Dumez

Sandrine is a Parisien who wants to become a farmer. Adrien is an old farmer, widower who is selling his farm. Sandrine bought Adrien's farm and turn it into a resort/farm, she has much to learn to be a farmer, Adrien also wants to train her, but he is keeping this cold face because all the farmers are skeptical about Parisien turns farmer... Indeed, it is a lot more difficult than Sandrine has anticipated but she is not giving up!

My review:
Though the plot is not really my cup of tea, but it is a nice simple story that is peaceful and positive. It presented some hardship that is not readily understood by people who live all their lives in the city.

Very good performance by Sophie Marceau to play the role of Marquise, a French actress of the 17th century.

During War war I, 5 French soliders were sentenced to death for self-inflicting wounds in the hope of early release from the army. Instead, they got caught and were sent to the front line, a no-man land between the German and French battlefield, unarmed and constantly in the cross-fire, they were going to die for sure. One of the 5 soliders was a young man by the name Manech who had a fianc?Ścalled Mathilde. After the war ended, Mathilde was determined that Manech survived and she embarked on a journey to find out what really happened and to search for Manech.

My review:
I am a big fan of Am?lie and this film was made by the same team that brought us Am?lie. The story is fairly complicated and it can be hard to follow, you really need to pay attention in order to understand it. The film has done a great job in bring back the 1910s/20s feel of France. The war scene pretty impressive.

All in all it is a good film with a complicated storyline. I won't spoil it by telling you the ending.
